60% of Cryptocurrency Holders Want to Invest More
Investing in cryptocurrencies can represent both a highly lucrative profit prospect or an exposure to perceived excessive risk, depending on the profile of the investors involved. However, one reality remains effective: Bitcoin consistently outperforms the S&P 500 over all holding periods of four years recently studied by analyst Willy Woo.
This reality has been examined by the American financial services giant Charles Schwab, as part of its latest survey "Modern Wealth 2026" whose results have just been made public. According to the findings, it appears that "cryptocurrencies are increasingly integrated into how many Americans view building their wealth".
Indeed, this annual survey aimed at examining Americans' views on saving, spending, investing, and wealth highlights a significant number of current cryptocurrency holders, estimated at 60%, who say they are ready to invest more over the next 12 months.
This proportion is presented by Charles Schwab analysts as "higher than that of holders of any other measured investment", which includes interest in ETFs (56%), stocks (52%), bonds (42%), and mutual funds (41%).
Long-Term Growth and Diversification
But the Charles Schwab survey does not stop there. It also reveals that one in five Americans (21%) currently holds cryptocurrencies—a proportion that rises to 47% among investors—while 23% report not holding any but are closely interested.
Beyond current cryptocurrency investors, the survey shows that nine out of ten Americans are aware of cryptocurrencies. Within this group, more than half believe they are important or essential for building wealth (52%), while 43% expect them to become a more popular investment.

The main reasons for this interest? Their long-term growth potential (36%) and their role in diversifying a portfolio (33%), knowing that active holders are 84% convinced they own the right amount.
This trend is largely supported by Millennials, whose number of holders (33%) appears to be more than four times higher than the rate observed among Baby Boomers (8%), while members of Gen Z show a proportion of 22%. They also appear to be the most likely to increase their exposure over the next year (64%).
Cryptocurrencies are increasingly seen as a complement to traditional investments. Rather than treating them as an isolated position, investors are thinking more holistically about the role they could play in their overall portfolio and how they align with their financial goals.

Bitcoin and Ethereum Lead the Way
Despite growing interest, some barriers still exist, such as price volatility and associated risks. Indeed, more than half of those who are aware of cryptocurrencies consider them high-risk (52%), which represents the highest proportion of all investments measured in this survey. Other concerns also exist, such as scams or fraud (48%), a misunderstanding of how they work (39%), or a lack of regulation (34%).
Finally, the Charles Schwab survey attempts to determine the most common strategies among respondents who are already familiar with cryptocurrencies. The result shows that 44% of them "currently hold or wish to hold widely recognized cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ether".
Regarding other possible investments, 39% are interested in stocks related to crypto companies, and 37% are turning to ETPs and other mutual funds in cryptocurrencies. Additionally, 37% report holding stablecoins, and nearly a third (31%) currently hold or wish to hold tokenized assets.
Beyond investment, 35% of respondents familiar with cryptocurrencies believe they will become a more common means of payment over the next five years.
