Andrew Yang Calls for Federal Regulation of AI and Kill Switch
Andrew Yang is advocating for federal regulation of frontier AI labs, citing concerns that AI models are advancing faster than existing safety measures. The former Democratic presidential candidate emphasized the need for oversight, stating that the American public demands regulation in the industry. Yang's comments come amid increased scrutiny of AI companies regarding autonomous agents capable of performing tasks with minimal human input. He noted that some researchers are urging lawmakers to intervene before market pressures lead to unsafe technological advancements. Yang supports the introduction of an AI Kill Switch Act, which would allow federal officials to throttle or shut down certain AI systems. He also called for liability for AI-related harms and mandatory waiting periods before deployment. Yang highlighted the stark contrast in regulatory oversight between AI and traditional businesses, pointing out that even a hot dog stand would face numerous regulations. He mentioned bipartisan concern among Congress members regarding AI regulation, indicating that anxiety about the technology transcends political lines.
