From 7,705 Yuan Box Office to 46.79 Million USD Meme: The Magical 72 Hours of 'Niu Lai'
So ugly it went viral, a consensus erupted.
Written by: Cathy
On August 17, Monday.
The A-shares opened, with Luoniushan, a company primarily engaged in pig farming, hitting the daily limit, and Jinniu Chemical rising over 6%; on the BSC chain, a meme coin called 'Niu Lai' reached a market cap of 46.79 million USD, setting a new record.
The source of all this is an animated film. Ten days before its release, its cumulative box office was only 7,705 Yuan, with fewer than 300 viewers.
How did a film on the verge of being swept out of theaters transform into a consensus worth nearly 47 million USD on the chain in just 72 hours?
A film with a box office of 3,420 Yuan became a hit
'Niu Lai' had 245 screenings on its first day, earning 3,420 Yuan. By the tenth day, there were only 4 screenings left nationwide.
Its production company was originally a decoration company in Dalian. The creative team consisted of just two people, a mother and son duo who served as the director and screenwriter. Modeling, voice acting, production, and the end credits song were all handled by this mother-son pair, taking five years with no external investment.
The only promotional material before release was a distant and poetic ink wash poster. Audiences entered expecting 'national style healing' but were met with poorly rendered, glitchy 3D animation that was mocked for its '4399 game quality.' A netizen summed it up well: the poster was a buyer's show, while the actual film was a seller's show.
On August 14, 'Niu Lai's box office of 7,352 Yuan went viral on social media. The rough visuals were shared on short video platforms, and ridicule began.
Then things spiraled out of control. The next day, the single-day box office soared to 484,000 Yuan, increasing by over 6,000%, with screenings jumping from 21 to 359, as cinema managers eagerly 'passionately scheduled' more showings. Some viewers drove 30 kilometers to buy tickets, not to watch the film, but to 'witness history.'
No one in the theater was quietly watching the film. The entire audience laughed, commented in real-time, and held up their phones to film. Some used the seating chart on ticketing apps to create support graphics, then shared the materials online to play along. The cumulative box office quickly surpassed 10 million.
After gaining popularity, doubts arose: how did such a low-quality film get a dragon mark? An unverified rumor circulated online, claiming the decoration company was owed 1 million in final payments, and the client suggested making an animated film to qualify for cultural subsidies.
This rumor was quickly refuted by industry professionals, stating that subsidies are issued based on cost ratios, and small individual studios have no room for arbitrage. However, the fact that this rumor spread indicates what people are willing to believe.
In fact, the dragon mark only ensures the baseline: as long as the content is compliant and there are no projection failures, it can pass. The review process has never cared about how good the visuals are. 'Niu Lai' focuses on maternal love and growth, making it as safe as can be.
Thus, the absurdity continued to escalate. The single-day box office surged past 4.85 million Yuan, entering the top ten of annual domestic animated films. Predictions for the total box office were once raised to 18.37 million Yuan.
Who is paying for the 'roughness'?
To attribute this to mere curiosity is too simplistic.
In today's internet, AI-generated images are everywhere, perfectly composed, flawless, yet devoid of warmth. Every industry is pushed to the extreme, and audiences have grown tired of 'high expectations, low delivery' industrial blockbusters.
At this moment, a 'non-AI' work emerged: crafted by a mother and son, with limited capabilities, its flaws are fully exposed. One netizen described it harshly yet accurately: it’s like a madman running naked at a masquerade ball.
A chief strategist from a brokerage firm offered an explanation: people have aesthetic needs, but they also have a need for the ugly; there’s a need for looking up, and a need for looking down.
Hollywood has long performed this script. 'The Room' was criticized by critics for twenty years but has been supported by audiences in midnight screenings for twenty years, becoming a cult classic. An animation director directly defined it: 'Niu Lai' is becoming a local cult classic for Generation Z, a public cultural event directed and performed by young people.
Even more interesting is the name. 'Niu Lai' sounds like 'bull market is coming.' For A-share investors who have been hovering around 4,000 points and cryptocurrency players who have endured years of market conditions, these two characters are not just a film title; they are a wishing pool.
Investors share movie tickets in stock forums, captioned 'Niu Lai skyrocketing.' A ticket costing a few dozen Yuan is like lighting a stick of incense for macro expectations. As for Luoniushan, which hit the daily limit on Monday, its main business is pig farming, having nothing to do with the film.
72 Hours on the Chain
The real trigger was the people on the chain.
On August 13, before the film even hit the trending list, someone deployed a contract of the same name on BSC. Once the trending topic exploded, this coin surged over 150 times in 24 hours, with a market cap exceeding 15 million USD.
What followed was a textbook script. The market cap first broke 20 million USD; then within an hour, it retracted by 18.65%, reaching a market cap of 13.34 million, as early profit-takers exited.
In between, there was a rollercoaster ride. According to on-chain market data, the market cap plummeted from 29 million USD back to 10 million, then made a V-shaped recovery, with the 24-hour trading volume once surging to 37.6 million USD, exceeding the market cap itself.
Of course, high turnover doesn’t mean everyone is running. Some entered and exited within minutes, repeatedly trading, while others held on tightly from start to finish. For those trading, this isn’t holding; it’s a gamble.
By August 17, as expectations for the A-shares opened heated up, funds rushed to push prices up. According to GMGN data, the market cap peaked at 46.79 million USD. Currently, it remains above 36 million USD.
Let’s do the math. The mother and son duo spent five years, with a box office of over 10 million Yuan, about 1.5 million USD, and they still have to share with the theaters. An anonymous deployer wrote a string of contract codes in a matter of minutes, with no copyright, no authorization, and no business, triggering a market cap of 46.79 million USD.
The issuing address clearly understands the value of this wave of traffic: taking advantage of the heat to continuously issue new coins, including the 'trip hazard' that captures movie memes. One fish, multiple meals, extracting value without dead angles.
In the world of memes, the most important thing is whether the story has the power to spread. 'Niu Lai' happens to have it all: trending topics, homophones, emotions, and the A-shares as an external amplifier.
The so-called consensus is not that everyone believes this film is valuable, but that everyone believes 'there will be another buyer.' The content is merely a cheap hook; the real business is to instantly tokenize public sentiment and then harvest liquidity.
-- Price
How long can this consensus last?
CITIC Securities and Shenwan Hongyuan have already poured cold water on the A-shares, warning against emotional speculation. Simply put, this kind of 'bull' has no fundamental support.
On the chain, there won’t even be research reports.
The judgment is not complicated: the fundamental of this meme is the trending topic itself, and the lifecycle of the trending topic is its lifecycle. There’s no team, no lock-up, and the chip structure depends entirely on the deployer's mood. You think you’re participating in a cultural event, but the market maker sees you as liquidity.
Of course, amidst the revelry, some people did make money. Early birds who entered on the day the contract was created spent only 99 USD, and their account value multiplied thousands of times.
This is the most enticing side of memes, and also the most deceptive: you see the screenshots of sudden wealth, but you don’t see the timing to exit.
Of course, some memes have truly become cultural symbols. Dogecoin endured for eight years, evolving from a joke into a belief. 'Niu Lai' has only lived for four days, and the story is not yet finished.
For meme players, what’s truly worth remembering is not this coin, but this machine: any social hotspot, from trending to contract deployment, takes just a few minutes. Wherever attention goes, harvesting follows. When the next 'Niu Lai' appears, the script won’t change; only the name will.
The film will leave theaters, trending topics will turn pages, but the contract will remain on the chain. Whether it slowly approaches zero or becomes the next long-term consensus, the cards have yet to be revealed.
After all, Dogecoin started as just a joke.
