Injective Experiences $4.9 Million Attack, No New Blocks Produced for 4 Hours
Injective was attacked on August 31, resulting in nearly four hours without producing new blocks, leading to approximately $4.9 million being transferred to Ethereum. The foundation stated on September 1 that the network has been upgraded and did not halt operations. Blockchain consensus, the INJ token, and staked assets were unaffected, while the issue impacted a small number of ecosystem applications using the binary options market. On-chain researcher Earthling Paddy questioned the qualitative nature of the attack, suggesting it was related to the messaging mechanisms of Injective's native exchange and insurance module, while acknowledging that the network's response measures preserved staked funds. Block 181027005 was timestamped at 16:09:59 UTC, indicating the interruption occurred just before this time. Injective noted that the time required for the rapid upgrade exceeded expectations, and validators and ecosystem infrastructure are migrating to an emergency version. The emergency version v1.20.3-safeharbor.1 modified the core code by adding denomination checks and disabling binary options liquidation. Some validators were temporarily penalized for missing the mandatory upgrade window. Researchers estimate that approximately $4.9 million was transferred to Ethereum during the attack, and Paddy indicated that a similar amount remains in wallets associated with the attackers. Injective has not yet released a complete technical post-mortem analysis and has not detailed the final distribution of losses.
