Only 16 out of 1000 firms in Europe have licenses to operate cryptocurrencies in Spain
Currently, only 16 out of more than 1000 operators in the European Union have the legal authorization to offer cryptocurrency services in Spain. The National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) has granted 10 licenses directly in the national market, of which 6 correspond to traditional banks: Openbank, BBVA, Cecabank, Renta 4, CaixaBank, and KutxaBank. The other licenses are for native sector companies, such as exchanges Bit2Me and Criptan, as well as firms specialized in infrastructure and digital asset management like Crossmint, Due Network, Fazil Crypto, Cryptopocket, Goin Crypto, Iqana, Minos Global, and Prosegur Crypto. This data reflects the strict regulatory funnel following the implementation of the Regulation on Crypto-Asset Markets (MiCA) on July 1 of this year. Since the entry into force of the new legal framework, any platform without official registration as a Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) cannot operate legally in Europe. At the continental level, only 210 entities obtained CASP accreditation at the beginning of the process, representing less than one in five previously registered platforms. At the end of the transitional period, approximately 281 authorized entities were counted out of a total of 1343 applicants, and currently, there are about 390 firms approved under the new standards.
