Payment Pathways for Groceries and Fuel Using USDT in India
A payment pathway has been identified in India where cryptocurrencies like Tether (USDT) are exchanged for local gift cards to be used for groceries, fuel, mobile phone top-ups, and food delivery. An overseas fintech platform is converting Indian users' cryptocurrencies into local vouchers, allowing users to send cryptocurrencies from their personal wallets, while the platform provides exchange codes. These vouchers are a closed-loop prepaid method that can only be used at specific brands, serving as a link between cryptocurrencies and everyday consumption. Some platforms sell vouchers priced in Indian Rupees, and upon confirming the cryptocurrency payment, they send a digital code via email. The transaction structure involves settlements between the overseas platform and local gift card partners in India, where the platform sells the USDT received from users overseas and pays the local partner for the voucher purchase cost. This method can be interpreted as transforming the process of exchanging cryptocurrency for fiat currency into a voucher purchase structure. Regulatory issues include cross-border payments, foreign exchange, taxation, and anti-money laundering obligations, and there is a need for criteria to determine whether voucher sales fall under cryptocurrency transfer or payment services. As pathways connecting consumption through vouchers instead of direct cryptocurrency payments are confirmed in India, the practical usage scope of cryptocurrency payments and regulatory gaps have been revealed.
