The data leak that affected more than 13,000 buyers of hardware wallets from Trezor has raised alarms in the bitcoin (BTC) and cryptocurrency ecosystem.
The incident, revealed yesterday, August 13, 2026, was caused by an external logistics provider contracted by Trezor.
As reported by CriptoNoticias, the leak exposed names, email addresses, phone numbers, and physical addresses of thousands of Trezor customers, opening the door to possible social engineering attacks or physical extortion.
In light of this scenario, the need to protect identity when acquiring tools related to the digital asset has become a priority. In this regard, the developer identifying himself as Ben (product designer and developer of the portal Orange.surf) firmly warned: "Buying bitcoin hardware? Don’t send it to your home; use PO boxes, aliases, or buy in person."
According to the specialist, the usual practice of receiving these supplies directly at the main residence carries a latent danger.
For specific bitcoin products, the existing default pattern of sending to your home address is dangerous, Ben points out, adding that the seller may be malicious and use your private data to carry out a physical attack, or their database (which includes your data) may be compromised and eventually sold online.
To mitigate the exposure of the user's physical location, the developer proposes viable alternatives in the logistics process:
Furthermore, the specialist emphasizes that the risk is not limited to the physical address but also to the digital communication channel. If the seller keeps a record of the email even after the product has been shipped, they have a persistent and direct communication channel with their customer, he warns, reminding that security breaches in databases often expose these contact lists permanently.
As a solution for order updates, he proposes the use of email aliases: A buyer can use an email alias service. They generate a unique email address and provide it to the seller, which avoids exposing the user's main email.
Another proposed option is the adoption of models based on unique one-time account codes to verify the status of orders on the manufacturer's website.
In conclusion, protecting bitcoin holdings requires going beyond securing private keys. **Reducing the footprint of personal data during the acquisition process of devices is an essential step to reduce risks.
