Bitcoin ETF Could Grow Three Times Larger Than Gold ETF Market
A forecast suggests that Bitcoin spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) could grow into a market three times larger than that of gold ETFs in the long term. Eric Balchunas, a senior ETF analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, stated that Bitcoin ETFs could surpass the asset size of gold ETFs within the next 3 to 5 years. According to the World Gold Council (WGC), the global assets under management for gold ETFs were approximately $615 billion at the end of last month. Based on this, the Bitcoin ETF market could expand to around $1.845 trillion. The influx of younger investors and increased institutional participation are expected to be the main growth drivers. A survey by the Pew Research Center found that 26% of individuals aged 18 to 29 have experience investing in digital assets. In the first quarter of this year, the proportion of professional investors in U.S. Bitcoin ETF assets was 20.8%, and the Bitcoin holdings of banks have increased nearly fourfold compared to a year ago. The cumulative net inflow of the U.S. Bitcoin spot ETF, which was launched in January 2024, has reached approximately $54.6 billion, establishing Bitcoin as a traditional financial product. However, Bitcoin ETFs have recently experienced net outflows, leading to increased short-term supply and demand volatility. Investors are showing a tendency to buy both gold and Bitcoin simultaneously, and Balchunas predicts that institutional adoption will increase when Bitcoin's volatility approaches that of gold.
