China Can Boost Crypto, Says Former Top Banker
A former top banker expects that China can grow the crypto market if the country allows trading again. Joseph Chee, former head of UBS's investment bank in Asia and now executive chairman of Solana Company, believes that Chinese investors could create new demand for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. However, Chee does not specify a date for a potential reopening. Mainland China currently maintains a ban on crypto trading. Chee sees Hong Kong as a testing ground for regulated crypto services, where its own rules apply to crypto platforms and stablecoins. He thinks Beijing can learn from the approach in Hong Kong, but this does not guarantee that the same rules will be applied on the mainland. In February 2026, Chinese regulators reaffirmed that crypto trading is illegal and that foreign parties are not allowed to offer crypto services to customers on the mainland. Chee's statements should be viewed as an expectation, not as a confirmation of policy change.
