Gnosis Pay Experiences Data Breach
A security incident occurred at Gnosis Pay, resulting in the leakage of customers' home addresses, card numbers, and digital asset wallet addresses. While no customer funds have been confirmed as compromised, the connection between personal information and digital asset holdings has increased the risk of targeted fraud. On the 3rd, Gnosis Pay detected unauthorized access to its consumer card system and began to contain the incident within two hours. The leaked information included customer names, home addresses, card numbers, and digital asset wallet addresses linked to accounts. Lefteris Karapetsas, founder of Lotkey, publicly disclosed that his personal information had been leaked and criticized the company's response. CoinDesk pointed out that the leaked information could be exploited for targeted fraud by linking real identities to digital asset wallets. Gnosis Pay did not disclose the number of affected customers but notified those impacted via email about the details of the leaked information. In 2023, Gnosis Pay has been supporting stablecoin payments by linking Visa debit cards to digital asset wallets, with an annual transaction volume of approximately $67.6 million. This incident follows a previous event in June where a vulnerability in wallet software led to the theft of about $1.5 million. The company has mandated 3D Secure authentication for online card payments and strengthened monitoring of fraudulent transactions.
