What happened in European markets this Thursday

The European trading session this Thursday was marked by a combination of factors that, individually, would be neutral, but together created an atmosphere of widespread caution. The pan-European Stoxx 600 index fell by 0.04%, closing at 659.24 points, on a day when investors had to simultaneously process disparate corporate earnings, UK GDP data, and a reassessment of the pace of interest rate cuts in the United States.

In London, the FTSE 100 led the losses among major indices, dropping by 0.56% to close at 10,772.67 points. Frankfurt's DAX declined by 0.12% to 26,299.74 points, while Paris's CAC 40 fell by 0.28% to 8,650.56 points. The pattern of widespread decline, albeit modest, reveals a market that no longer finds sufficient catalysts to maintain the upward momentum accumulated in recent months.

For those following global markets and their reflections on Brazilian assets, the signal is clear: Europe is entering a phase of digestion, where macro data does not excite and corporate profits tell very different stories depending on the sector. As we have analyzed in our coverage of global finance, this sectoral divergence tends to intensify during transitions in monetary policy.

Corporate Earnings: Winners and Losers in the Same Session

The second-quarter earnings season brought striking contrasts. In Copenhagen, Danish shipping giant Maersk, a global leader in container shipping, surged by 9.4% after reporting robust numbers. Jewelry brand Pandora followed the optimism, rising by 8.5%, also supported by results that exceeded expectations.

On the other side of the spectrum, the mining sector put pressure on London. Antofagasta fell by 5.9%, in an emblematic case of what is troubling the market at the moment: the company even increased its profit but reduced its production guidance for the remainder of the year. In other words, the present was good, but the future became more uncertain. Rio Tinto dropped by 4.7% after it was revealed that the company and its partners received a $1.8 billion injection from the Australian government to keep the Tomago smelter operational, signaling operational weaknesses that the market did not ignore.

This divergence between sectors is a pattern that frequently repeats itself in times of macroeconomic uncertainty. Companies linked to consumption and logistics manage to ride the resilience of household spending, while commodity firms face the dual challenge of uncertain Chinese demand and high operational costs. For Brazilian investors exposed to mining companies like Vale, the parallel is direct and deserves attention.

UK GDP Grows, but Doesn't Excite

The UK's Gross Domestic Product grew by 0.4% in the second quarter compared to the previous three months, exactly in line with market expectations. Numbers that confirm expectations tend to have little effect on prices, and that is what happened. There was neither a positive nor a negative surprise.

What caught attention was the warning from consultancy Capital Economics, which projects a loss of momentum in UK growth for the remainder of the year. The UK economy is in a peculiar situation: the Bank of England has begun its cycle of interest rate cuts, but service inflation remains persistent, limiting the space for additional stimulus. It is a dilemma that echoes, on a smaller scale, what Brazil faces with the Selic, where the Central Bank needs to balance growth and inflation control in a challenging fiscal environment.

In the eurozone, industrial production remained stable in June compared to May. The data came in better than the projected decline of 0.1%, but "stable" can hardly be sold as good news for a region that has been flirting with industrial stagnation for quarters. The European industry, especially the German one, continues to be pressured by high energy costs and Chinese competition in sectors such as automotive and clean energy.

The Fed Factor: Why U.S. Interest Rates Still Set the Pace in Europe

A central element in the mood of European stock markets has been the reassessment of the trajectory of interest rates in the United States. Recent data showing softer inflation reinforced the thesis that the Federal Reserve may begin its cycle of cuts, but likely only at the end of the year. This perspective of "high rates for longer" in the U.S. has a direct effect on Europe.

The mechanism is simple: with the interest rate differential between the U.S. and Europe still wide, the dollar tends to remain strong, making European imports more expensive and draining capital flow from risk assets on the continent. Additionally, the ECB, which has already cut rates before the Fed, has limited room for further stimulus without risking excessive depreciation of the euro.

A relevant development on investors' radar is the potential acquisition of the German Commerzbank by the Italian UniCredit. According to internal documents, the European Central Bank is inclined to approve the operation, which would create one of the largest banks in Europe. Commerzbank shares rose 1.6% and UniCredit shares advanced 1%. Bank consolidation movements in Europe are historically positive for the sector, but raise questions about systemic risk concentration that regulators will need to address, something we have already discussed in previous analyses of the global financial sector.

What This Means for Investors in Brazil

The European session on Thursday did not bring any shocks but reinforced a narrative that has been gaining traction: the second half of the year will be one of selectivity. Global economic growth is slowing in an orderly manner, central banks are at different stages of their cycles, and corporate profits are diverging by sector.

For Brazilian investors, three points deserve attention. First, the weakness of European miners may foreshadow pressure on Vale and the Ibovespa, given the historical correlation between these assets. Second, the stability of European industrial production reduces the buying momentum for commodities, which directly affects the Brazilian trade balance. Third, the expectation of high U.S. interest rates for longer strengthens the dollar and may keep the real under pressure, requiring heightened attention from those with dollar-denominated positions.

The scenario is not one of crisis, but it is also not one of euphoria. It is the type of market that rewards those who do their homework and penalizes those who operate on autopilot.
