U.S. Pressure on Iran Shifts to Long-Term Strain, Oil Blockade Fails to Cut Revenue
The Trump administration is reassessing the timeline for economic pressure on Iran, as sanctions and port blockades have not forced Tehran to accept negotiation terms. Washington is gradually accepting that actions may last for months or even longer. U.S. Treasury Secretary Mnuchin had previously expected Iran Air to cease international operations by the end of September, but that goal was not achieved. Despite the blockade significantly reducing Iran's new oil exports, Iran continues to sell previously shipped stock. According to Reuters, there are still about 20 million barrels of Iranian crude oil outside the blockade zone, and Kpler data indicates that Iran can still transport about 250,000 barrels of oil daily across land borders. The U.S. will continue to target Iranian banks, airlines, oil tankers, and intermediary networks, pressuring foreign financial institutions and warning them that transactions with Iran may face secondary sanctions, while also limiting Iran's ability to evade sanctions through shadow fleets, ship-to-ship transfers, and third-country trade. However, economic pressure has yet to compel Iran to make concessions on core issues such as its nuclear program, with Tehran still demanding the U.S. lift the port blockade, ease oil sanctions, and release frozen assets. The U.S. believes that continued pressure on Iran's oil revenue and international financial channels will gradually shift the timeline in favor of the U.S., but a prolonged blockade also means higher military investments, shipping risks, and energy market costs.
