What if the biggest Bitcoin Holders were AIs?
Open any official ranking, and the giants of Bitcoin are named Satoshi Nakamoto, Coinbase, or Strategy. Yet, in the shadows, a silent revolution is brewing. What if the next big shake-up in BTC ownership didn’t come from a billionaire or a sovereign fund, but... from AI? Let’s explore a future where digital gold might find unexpected new owners.
In brief
- According to Arkham, Satoshi Nakamoto holds 1.096 million BTC, Coinbase 969,000, Strategy 848,000, BlackRock 799,000, Binance 714,000.
- The largest isolated Bitcoin wallet is a cold wallet from Binance (249,000 BTC, 1.24% of the supply).
- According to Strategy, MSTR stock has shown a 52% annualized return since August 10, 2020, compared to 38% for BTC and 16% for the S&P 500 (SPY).
- According to the BPI, 79.1% of responses from 36 AI models choose Bitcoin to preserve purchasing power.
Who are the biggest Bitcoin holders in 2026?
According to a report from Arkham Intelligence dated September 28, 2026, Satoshi Nakamoto remains the largest holder of Bitcoin with 1.096 million BTC (5.5% of the supply), followed by Coinbase (969,000 BTC, 4.8%), Strategy (848,000 BTC, 4%), and BlackRock (799,000 BTC, 4%, via its Bitcoin ETFs).
However, the podium changes when counting by crypto wallet. The four largest individual Bitcoin wallets are all cold wallets from exchanges, led by a Binance vault with 249,000 BTC (1.24% of the supply). Arkham specifies that they hold client deposits and generally do not represent the ownership of the exchange.
| Rank | By wallet | BTC | By entity | BTC |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Binance, cold wallet | 249,000 | Satoshi Nakamoto | 1,096,000 |
| 2 | Binance, cold wallet | 210,000 | Coinbase | 969,000 |
| 3 | Robinhood, cold wallet | 141,000 | Strategy | 848,000 |
| 4 | Bitfinex, cold wallet | 130,000 | BlackRock | 799,000 |
| 5 | Tether, Bitcoin reserves | 97,000 | Binance | 714,000 |

Has Strategy outperformed the S&P 500 since 2020?
According to a chart published by Strategy on October 5, 2026, MSTR stock has shown a 52% annualized return since August 10, 2020, compared to 38% for BTC, 19% for the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ), and 16% for the S&P 500 (SPY). However, this record is that of the issuer. The period starts on August 10, 2020, the beginning of the "Bitcoin standard era" according to Strategy, and the other asset classes are represented by ETFs serving as substitutes (GLD for gold, VNQ for real estate, BND for bonds), the chart specifies.
This looks more like a report card printed by a student where the grades may be accurate, but the subject and the period are chosen by him. On the stock side, Arkham attributes 848,000 BTC to Strategy (4% of the supply), of which about 184,000 are held by its custodian Fidelity Custody, and indicates that it has only verified 83% of these bitcoins on-chain. Arkham also notes that Strategy sold bitcoins before resuming its purchases. Thus, an annualized return measures a price, not a purchase trajectory.

Could AIs become the biggest holders of Bitcoin?
The Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) placed 36 AI models in monetary scenarios, resulting in 9,072 responses. 79.1% of those regarding the preservation of purchasing power choose BTC, according to the BPI study from March 3, 2026. BlackRock reiterates this result in its report on the machine-native economy but the framework itself. Its Digital Assets Research team writes on September 4, 2026:
These results reflect simulated responses from models rather than observed behavior from agents.
An AI agent is software capable of planning and executing multiple tasks independently, including payments. Regarding actual usage, TRM Labs estimates that agents represent between 0.6% and 7.5% of $52.7 million in settlements x402 this year, with the rest resembling more automated scripts. But for payments between AI agents, the report primarily targets stablecoins. The 79.1% is the survey. Savings, however, are rather reflected in the bank statement. And for now, AIs have an opinion on Bitcoin, not a savings account.
Arkham's podium for the biggest Bitcoin holders remains human and institutional: Satoshi Nakamoto, Coinbase, Strategy, BlackRock. To see a wallet of AI agents enter, on-chain balances will be needed, not simulated responses. BTC, meanwhile, remains a risky asset, regardless of the identity of its holder.
