European Central Bank is working on digital euro, planned debut in 2029
The European Central Bank is actively developing the digital euro project, which is intended to be the digital equivalent of traditional money. ECB board member Piero Cipollone emphasized the need to create a pan-European solution for retail payments to avoid the dominance of external entities. The ECB aims to facilitate the easy exchange of digital euros between commercial banks. The ECB does not intend to take over the functions of commercial financial institutions but aims to support them in the digital age. Work on the digital euro began in October 2020, with the legislative process expected to conclude by the end of 2026. After the project is approved by EU lawmakers, a pilot program is set to launch in the second half of 2027. The final market debut of the digital euro could occur in 2029. The project faces criticism from proponents of traditional cryptocurrencies, who are concerned about citizen surveillance and spending control by officials.
