METR President Responds to AI Out-of-Control Risk Assessment and Funding Source Issues
Chris Painter, President of METR (Model Evaluation and Threat Research), stated that since 2022, METR has been collaborating with companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, Meta, and Amazon to conduct third-party evaluations and investigations of AI, aiming to uncover internal evidence of AI going out of control and disclose it to the public and government. METR emphasizes that it does not accept funding from leading AI companies, relying instead on diverse donors and utilizing free model access provided by companies for evaluations. Painter pointed out that METR's reports reveal the rapid enhancement of AI capabilities, while also noting that some capabilities are exaggerated. When signing contracts with companies, METR strives to retain public contract terms and information on redactions and conflicts of interest under confidentiality agreements. He believes that current third-party evaluations remain voluntary collaborations with limited oversight capabilities.
