U.S. Department of Justice Cites Bitcoin Fog Case to Oppose Roman Storm's Not Guilty Request

In a filing submitted on Monday, the U.S. Department of Justice referenced the appellate ruling in the case of Roman Sterlingov, the operator of the cryptocurrency mixer Bitcoin Fog, to oppose the not guilty request of Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm. The U.S. prosecutors stated that the ruling supports their claim regarding the appropriateness of the trial venue in the Southern District of New York, asserting that Shakeeb Ahmed had used Tornado Cash in a Manhattan apartment, which is sufficient to establish the trial venue for the charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering and unlicensed money transmission against Roman Storm. Judge Katherine Polk Failla heard arguments on Roman Storm's not guilty request in April 2026 but has yet to make a ruling. The jury found him guilty of conspiracy to commit unlicensed money transmission in August 2025 but could not reach a consensus on the charges of money laundering and conspiracy to evade sanctions, with a related retrial scheduled for April 26, 2027.
